Transducers are devices that talk to your boat and convey important information from underneath the hull and underwater. Quoting Airmar, think of it as a speaker and a microphone built into one unit. The transducers here are SmartCraft transducers so they work with Mercury's Smartcraft enabled engines. 

The depth transducer converts variations in one energy form into corresponding variations of another energy form. Acoustical depth transducers produce sonic pulses throughout the water to provide an indication of the depth of the water below and show other reflective variations in the water. The sonic pulse from a transducer is a cone shaped projection (conical).
