How do I find the right serpentine belt?

How to Find the Correct Serpentine Belt for Your MerCruiser Engine

One of the most common questions we receive is: “How do I know which serpentine belt fits my engine?”

The most reliable way to find the correct belt is to look up your engine by serial number. MerCruiser engines may use different belts depending on the engine configuration, cooling system, drive type, and whether the boat has power steering.

Important: Do not select a serpentine belt based only on the engine model or horsepower. Always begin with your engine serial number.

Step 1: Look Up Your Engine by Serial Number

Enter your engine serial number in the Search by Serial Number box on our website. This will take you to the parts diagrams specifically associated with your engine.

Step 2: Locate the Belt in the Parts Diagrams

Once you are viewing the correct engine parts page, you can find the belt in either of these ways:

  • Enter belt in the part-name search box.
  • Open the Alternator parts diagram, where most serpentine belts are listed.

Step 3: Compare the Belt Options

Some engine diagrams list several possible belts. The correct choice may depend on equipment such as power steering, standard cooling, closed cooling, or the type of sterndrive installed.

On a phone or other mobile device, the parts list may appear in a narrower format:

Step 4: Check the Notes

Select or hover over the magnifying-glass icon in the Notes column to view important application details.

The notes may identify differences such as:

  • Bravo or Alpha sterndrive
  • With or without power steering
  • Standard cooling or closed cooling
  • Other engine-specific equipment

Once you have identified the correct option, click the part number to view its current replacement number, availability, photos, and additional product information.

🔧 BAM Tip: Mercury may list more than one belt on the same diagram. The information in the Notes column is often what determines which belt fits your particular engine configuration.
