SmartCraft Connect Guide: Mobile vs MFD

Updated February 2026

Mercury SmartCraft Connect bridges your engine data directly to your multi-function display (MFD) or mobile device. There are three distinct levels of functionality depending on your display brand and mobile needs.

⚠️ Compatibility Warning Not all GARMIN RAYMARINE or SIMRAD displays are compatible. Always verify your exact display model and software version before purchasing.
⚙️ The "Unlock" Rule Level 2 modules are explicitly built for Simrad integration. They can only pass data over to Garmin or Raymarine networks if a compatible Simrad unit or VesselView 704 remains actively powered on the NMEA 2000 backbone.

Quick Answer: Which System Do I Need?

Scenario A

I want engine data on my phone/tablet only.

Get SmartCraft Mobile
Scenario B (Recommended)

I want engine data directly on my GPS Chartplotter / MFD.

Get Level 3 Kit
Scenario C

I already have an active Simrad or VesselView 704 layout.

Deep Dive: The 3 SmartCraft Connect Configurations

These modules look identical on the outside but are programmed with completely distinct software restrictions. They are not interchangeable.

1. SmartCraft Connect Mobile (Level 1)

  • Connects exclusively via local Bluetooth to your personal smartphone or tablet.
  • Feeds comprehensive diagnostics directly to the official Mercury Marine mobile app.
  • Displays clear real-time engine metrics and descriptions of fault codes.
  • ⚠️ Will NOT output any data to fixed NMEA 2000 networks or chartplotters.
Best For: Basic handheld engine monitoring without networking requirements.

2. SmartCraft Connect Level 2

  • Requires a compatible SIMRAD display or a VesselView 704 head unit to initialize fitment.
  • The system remains locked until it recognizes these baseline validation displays on the network line.
  • Garmin and Raymarine screens can piggyback off this information *only* while the Simrad remains online.
  • ⚠️ Removing the Simrad hardware will shut down network engine streaming within a few key cycles.
Best For: Hull integration layouts built natively around a core Simrad glass dash framework.

3. SmartCraft Connect Level 3 (Highly Recommended)

Zero Compatibility Headaches
  • Shipped fully unlocked and ready to transmit right out of the box.
  • Natively supports authorized displays from SIMRAD, GARMIN, and RAYMARINE.
  • Operates completely independently without requiring secondary unlock monitors.
  • ✓ Concurrently includes full Bluetooth connectivity to the mobile application ecosystem.
Best For: Over 90% of standard mechanical or digital engine retrofits.

❌ Common Purchasing Pitfalls

The Mobile Blindspot: Buying the Mobile kit assuming it will patch gauges over to a glass helm chartplotter. It will not.
The Level 2 Lockout: Buying Level 2 hardware to save on upfront costs without owning an operational Simrad device to activate it.
The Visual Trap: Assuming these gateway variants can be field-upgraded. Their feature limits are permanent based on the serial tier.
