Some remanufacured and a handfull of new items require the return to Mercuy of your old item, this is called a "Core".

A core charge is a deposit that is charged when the new item is purchased. Once your old part is returned to Mercury this deposit is returned to you.

Shipping cost for the return is paid by Mercury so there is no additional cost to you (within US only).

If your powerhead, longblock or transmission core is cracked, has a hole in it or has ingested water only 50% of your deposit will be returned.

Most items with core charges come in a re-usable container that makes this process easy. In most cases there is also a deposit for the container. The container deposit is refunded 100% regardless of the condition of the core.
