What Is a Bravo Transom Assembly?
A Bravo transom assembly—also commonly called a gimbal housing or simply a transom—connects the sterndrive to the boat and performs several critical functions within the engine and drive package.
The assembly helps seal the transom opening, supports steering and trim operation, routes cooling water and exhaust, and provides mounting points for the sterndrive and rear of the engine. It also contains important service components such as the gimbal bearing, bellows, shift cable, trim cylinders, and corrosion-protection hardware.
Because so many systems come together at the transom assembly, corrosion, wear, or water intrusion should never be ignored.
When Should You Replace a Bravo Transom?
A complete replacement may be the most reliable option when the assembly has extensive damage or several major components require repair.
Common reasons for replacement include:
- Severe corrosion or saltwater damage
- A worn or damaged gimbal ring
- Excessive steering play
- Damage around the bellows or sealing surfaces
- Water intrusion or structural deterioration
- A major engine repower or sterndrive conversion
Complete Assembly or Individual Repair Components?
Not every problem requires a complete transom assembly. Normal service items such as the bellows, gimbal bearing, seals, and related hardware may be replaced individually when the main housing, gimbal ring, steering components, and mounting surfaces remain in good condition.
If the assembly has significant corrosion, a worn gimbal ring, damaged steering components, or deterioration in several areas, replacing the complete assembly may be more practical than rebuilding it one component at a time.

Bravo One, Bravo Two and Bravo Three Compatibility
Bravo One, Bravo Two, and Bravo Three sterndrives may use similar or shared transom assemblies, but the drive model alone does not determine which transom assembly you need.
The correct replacement can depend on the engine application, steering configuration, model year, corrosion-protection package, and other equipment. Always verify the Mercury part number using the existing transom serial number before ordering.

How do I determine which transom assembly I need?
The best starting point is the serial number from your existing transom assembly. Do not select a replacement using only the Bravo One, Bravo Two, or Bravo Three drive designation.
Where can I find the transom serial number?
